Here are some answers to questions our clients frequently ask regarding the stone options that we offer such as granite, marble, soap stone and quartz.

For Beauty that Lasts...

Consider: Granite, Quartz or Marble
Why should I consider Quartz Countertops?
Quartz is a manufactured product and can be very attractive. the manufacturing process allows a much wider range of colors than you’ll find in natural stones such as marble or granite. The appearance of the finished quartz is rich and luxurious.

Quartz has the same durability as granite, but is quite a bit more forgiving, so it won’t chip or crack as easily. Quartz is non-pourous so it resists staining much better than granite or marble. It stands up to juice, oil, wine, tomato, coffee and other sources of stains in the kitchen. For cleanliness, a non-pourous surface means that it will not harbor bacteria or viruses. You cn always be confident that you are getting your quartz countertop absolutely clean, and that’s a great benefit in both the kitchen and the bathroom.

Granite versus Quartz:  What is the difference?
Granite is 100% natural stone while quartz is engineered. As the magma within the earth cools, it forms into granite. The granite is then mined and cut into slabs for installation into homes and businesses. Quartz is formed using a mixture of stone chips, resins, and pigments. The mixture is then heated to high temperatures and formed into slabs which are then fabricated in the same method as granite and used for various purposes in homes and businesses.

What else should I know about Quartz Countertops?
The look of quartz countertops is contemporary. However, some homeowners will prefer the more natural look of granite, marble or soap stone. The seams on engin eered stone countertops are sometimes noticeable too, about like those with granite countertops, but this isn’t a deal breaker for most people. Finally, quartz is not as resistant to heat as granite, so caution will have to be used with hot pots and pans in the kitchen or hot hair tools in the bathroom. For a contemporary, upscale look quartz is definitely worth considering. Be aware of the few potential drawbacks and their price. If you’re willing to live with those things, quartz countertops should meet or exceed your expectations.

Should I use Marble or Granite for my kitchen countertops?
Although typical application of marble is for bathroom vanity tops, it is occasionally used in the kitchen. However, Marble is easy to scratch and is affected by acidic substances such as vinegar, ketchup etc. we don’t usually recommend it. Moreover the high-gloss of the marble countertop can be partially lost as many chemicals etch its surface. Granite in turn is considered the second hardest stone, its polish is not subject to etching by household acids, or scratching by knives and pots and pans under normal use. It is also not affected by typical kitchen heat such as hot pans.

Is Quartz more expensive?
Quartz is approximately 20% to 40% more expensive than granite. Quartz combines the timeless beauty of natural stone with superior strength and durability.

Our premium quartz slabs are manufactured using the most advanced technoloty and our extensive color pallette provides infinite design possibilities. See our colors at our dealer showroom, or have a sample delivered to your home or office.

Why is Granite so popular?
Granite has emerged as the most popular kitchen countertop material because of its natural beauty and durability as well as the increased availability from various parts of the world.

* The elegance of granite countertops adds value to homes
* Heat, scratch, and stain resistant
* Granite outlasts even the life of the home it is installed in
* Very little maintenance is required
* It is more affordable than many people think because of the abundant supply

How can I keep my countertops looking like new?
Xact Stone recommends using GranQuarts 3-in-1 Spray Cleaner or a clear, mild dish washing detergent mixed with warm water when you are cleaning stone surfaces. Use a clean rag mop on floors and a soft cloth on other surfaces. Do not use products that contain lemon, vinegar or other acids on marble or other calcareous stones. Do not use scouring powders or creams; these products contain abrasives that may scratch the stone.

Is it necessary to seal stone?
If its natural stone, then there is a chance it mught need sealing. Each type of stone is different, so please ask us about the sealing and maintenance process. A really great source for this is the Marble Institute of America.

Should I avoid citrus and hot items on my natural stone countertops?

Use coasters under all glasses, particularly those containing alcohol or citrus juice. Many common foods and drinks contain acids that will etch or dull the surface of softer stones like travertine and limestone. It is also recommended to not place hot items directly on the stone surface. It is our recommendation that you use trivets or mats under hot cookware.
